Great texture, okay taste, but strange smell and aftertaste?
I buy a ton of Sola products. This brand has by far and away been a godsend for me since my diagnosis. We discovered Costco sells a double pack of the sweet & buttery bread loaves, so we usually stock up and freeze them for later. I just discovered their bagels and I'm absolutely in love. These buns, though? Honestly, they don't really cut it. The texture is, as with all of Sola's products, excellent. The flavor isn't bad, per se. The problem lies in the smell and aftertaste. I originally had thought it was the lunch meat I had used (I was making mortadella and provolone sandwiches, used these buns in place of kaiser rolls). It smells very distinctly of green olives. It TASTES distinctly of green olives. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out where the source of that smell and taste came from, and then I realized it when I went to sniff the buns. I'll be honest: These are only passable because of the type of sandwich I made. The green olive taste doesn't feel super out of place. I can guarantee that were this any other dish (hamburgers or what have you) it would be a very obvious and perhaps unwelcome flavor profile. It could also be that I got a bad set of buns. I don't think that these have gone bad, though. No mold present, well within the sell by date, and the first set of buns I ate I did not get sick from. I'll buy another pack at a later point and, if things change for the better, I'll update my review. If I don't update it, I stand by this one.
